Let’s take a closer look on how to use the time tenses we have seen so far in a conversation. Pay attention to the following dialogs and feel free to listen to them as many times you need.

Girl: Hello, how are you?
Boy: Oh, hello! I’m great, and you?
Girl: I’m fine! Are you still working at DX?
Boy: Not anymore! Now I’m working at FX.
Girl: Good for you!
Boy: And you, where do you work?
Girl: I’m between jobs at me moment. But I am going to work at KX still this year, if everything goes right.
Boy: That is good news! It is nice to talk to you.
Girl: Yes, it is. See you later.
Boy: See you soon.

Can you answer this questions?
1) Where are they?
2) Are they acquainted?
3) Do they work together?

Now listen to another conversation:

Girl: Hey, here you are!
Boy: Hello, where were you?
Girl: I was buying new books!
Boy: Are they English books?
Girl: No, they aren’t. They are History books!
Boy: Was the library crowded?
Girl: The Library on the corner? No, it was ok.
Boy: Were there any English books there?
Girl: There weren’t English books when I went there last week, but maybe there are new books this week.
Boy: Yes, maybe there will be new English books this week.

Can you answer this questions?
1) Where are they?
2) Are they friends?
3) What are they talking about?
4) Who was at the park and who was at the library?

It’s time to check your answers; refering to the first dialog:
Question 1) Where are they?
Answer: They are on the street
Question 2) Are they acquainted?

Question 3) Do they work together?

It’s time to check your answers; refering to the second dialog:

Answer: They are at the park
Question 2) Are they friends?
Answer: Yes, they are friends
Question 3) What are they talking about?
Answer: They are talking about books
Question 4) Who was at the park and who was at the library?

Agora vamos nos aprofundar um pouco no vocabulário necessário para se apre-sentar ou apresentar uma terceira pessoa durante uma conversa.

When you meet new people you need to start a conversation with them, or as the americans say, you need to break the ice. A good way to do it is by introducing yourself. Listen to this:

  • Hi, Nice to meet you. I’m Paula! And you?
  • Hello, my name is Paula! What’s your name?

This sentences show a very informal way to greet an unknown person; listen now to the formal introduction:

  • Hello, I don’t think we have met yet. Let me introduce myself. My name is Paula and I work with…
  • Good morning/afternoon/evening. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Paula and I work with…

Sometimes it will be necessary to introduce someone else to your friends, listen to this sentences and learn how to do it:

  • Hey, this is my friend, Mota! I don’t think you met him.
  • Allow me to introduce my good friend Mota. He has been the editor of PodClass.
  • May I introduce you to my colleague, Mota? He’s right over there.

Again you see shorter sentences as an informal introduction and longer sentences with more advanced structures being used to make formal introductions.

This happens because if you use informal communication it seems you already have passed the formal stage and probably know the other person well.

But pay attention! If you saw the other person many times before but haven’t really became friends with them, continue to use formal language until you come to know them very well.
